All of our staff have unique talents that contribute to our growing bench of climate adaptation projects. We love to mentor newly minted or current graduate students through our internship programs. Occasionally, we may also have a need for a full-time hire as our firm grows. Open internships and positions are noted below. If you don't see anything listed, we may not have anything open right now.

GIS and Data Analyst
(Full Time Flexible Hours)

We have an immediate need for an entry- to mid-level GIS and Data Analysis to join our Bay Area team. At Pathways, our projects are multi-faceted, including scientific research to fill climate science data gaps, climate vulnerability and risk assessments, and supporting communities as they re-envision their shorelines, built infrastructure, urban and natural environments, and develop policies to address the growing challenges of climate change. Our multi-disciplinary staff work closely together, often wearing many hats, to develop innovative tools and solutions for our clients.

We are looking for someone that loves to analyze data (lots of data!), knows the ArcGIS environment, enjoys automating processes, has interest or experience in developing online tools and dashboards, and has programming experience -- particularly python.

We are looking for someone that will seamlessly integrate with our team and help increase our capacity to serve our clients. Our firm believes strongly in under promising and over delivering – exceeding our clients’ expectations at every step along the way.

Our firm believes strongly in using our talents as a force for good in our world. We re-invest our profits in our staff and in internal research and development efforts so we can better support our clients as they adapt and mitigate to climate change. We believe in giving back to the communities where we work and offer multiple opportunities for paid service days such as volunteering in local food banks and supporting beach cleanup efforts.

Our ideal candidate can:

  • Entry- to mid-level in experience (0 to 6 years)

  • MS degree in a field related to geography, atmospheric/environmental science, engineering, etc.

  • Self-motivated, with ability to learn and grow on the job

  • Enjoy working both independently and within a group environment

We are looking for the following suite of skills

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software platforms and applications (ArcPRO, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online)

  • Skilled with spatial analysis using geoprocessing tools to extract, clean, and analyze datasets

  • Ability to make organized GIS data sets and geodatabases with an understanding of the importance of metadata (and sometimes cleaning up data sets provided by others so we can retain a high standard of quality)

  • Knowledge of GIS-based python scripting for automating analyses and tasks. This will often require listening to our non-GIS staff and client needs (and our crazy ideas) and developing new scripts and innovative techniques that can help meet the demanding and ever-changing and expanding needs of our clients.

  • Experience with data analysis and python scripting using Jupyter Notebooks is a huge plus -- we don't do all our data analysis in GIS

  • Strong technical and analytical skills

  • Legally entitled to work in the U.S.

  • Located in the San Francisco Bay Area

We have an office an at 650 California Street in San Francisco, CA.

During the global pandemic, 100 percent of our staff have been working from home. We have slowly begun our return to the office and envision continuing with a hybrid approach of in office collaboration and remote work. We have always encouraged staff to work from home when needed. At Pathways, work-life balance is important and not just an abstract idea. We hire amazing high-ability staff and we trust them to get their work done - in the office, at home, or on the road. However, we are not set up to support remote staff located outside of California and Washington state, and we strongly prefer candidates that are in the San Francisco Bay Area that can join us in person at the office and for team-building events and community service days.

Pathways is an equal opportunity employer, and we welcome applications from anyone who meets our qualifications. However, all applicants must be legally able to work in the U.S. Relocation assistance is not available.

We are a very small, research-based firm with a team of staff that are very passionate and committed to helping communities mitigate and adapt to climate change. If you can see yourself as part of our team, please send your resume and cover letter to careers@pathwaysclimate.com today!
